** Michael Schumacher slowed at end allowing Rubens Barrichello to win.
In 1999, The Indianapolis Motor Speedway went through a major reconstruction,
part of which was in preparation for a Formula One race. A road course was
constructed that wound through the infield. It joined onto the oval track and used
about half of it. Garages were built along the pit lane as well. During this
construction, the speedway, under the helm of Tony George, also built a new
pagoda-style control tower, a new media center, a tall round awards platform
and a new flagsman stand.
