500 Festival  Queen
Jerilyn Jones
Queen Jerilyn is the first non-Indianapolis
girl to reign over the festival. A native of
Flora, she is a sophmore at IU and is
majoring in English and drama. She is a
member of Kappa Kappa Gamma
Sorority and maintains a 3.2 grade
average out of a possible 4. Jerilyn, a
lovely brunette, is 20 years of age. She
stands 5 feet, 4 and says she weighs
about 107 pounds.

Roger Ward received kiss from 500 queen
for winning the 1962 Indy 500
The Borg-Warner Corporation, which annually awards the Borg-Warner Trophy to
the winner of the Indy 500, began this year to present a $1,000 scholarship to the
500 queen.  This resulted in a change to the rules for the "500" princess program
which has endured to the present day.  From this pageant onwards, the girls must
be a freshman, sophomore or junior enrolled in an Indiana college.

The queen also received other prizes.  For the 4th year in a row, Rost Jewelers
provided a gold charm bracelet for the queen.  Jerilyn received her coronation
gown and other clothing from local department stores.  Jerilyn's mother and
grandmother were seamstresses and worked many hours custom making other
outfits for the queen to wear during May.

Queen Jerilyn had over 50 appearances to make during the month of May.  One is
pictured below, where she christened the new flights of 707 air-liners from Indy to
L.A.
Jerilyn said, "As queen, I've appeared at many places in
Indianapolis and elsewhere.  And I've had many interesting
and amusing experiences.

"I attended the official opening of the Speedway for
qualifications and helped sweep the track surface with the
four members of my court.

"Also I was on hand for the "500" Festical bowling and golf
tournaments and presented trophies to the winners.

"One of my most memorable experiences was the excursion
to Louisville, KY., May 5 when "500" Festival personnel
participated in the parade prior to the Kentucky Derby."
