In a box of old family photos, I found these pictures.
It appears my relatives were watching the race from the
infield along the back straight.
I can date these photos as there is a photo of the fire
which ravaged the garage area in 1941.
The above photo was taken from the back straight, looking west across the infield.
The billowing smoke comes from a fire that broke out in the garage area
before the start of the race.
This must not have been
my family's first race since
they knew about building
a platform.
This looks like my mom
in the giant hair bow.
She would have been 14
years old.
The other woman looks
like my Aunt Violet. She
married my mom's brother
Ray in 1940.
To get a better view of the
track, some people built
platforms above their vehicles.
Notice the pith helmets on two track workers. These hats provide a lot
of shade in the hot sun and were used by track workers for years.
