Qualifying scheduled for yesterday will be run today.
Due to the time parameters needed for “knockout rounds,” initial qualifying runs
will determine positions 13-33, with the fastest 12 qualifiers continuing directly to
a Top 12 round. There will not be a Top 15 session, as originally planned.
The order of Top 12 begins in reverse of qualifying speeds from the cars’ initial
qualifying attempts (12, 11, 10, 9, etc). Each car will have one attempt. Those
finishing seventh through 12th will fill out starting positions 7-12 according to their
time and speed.
The fastest six will advance to the next round of “500” qualifying and the Firestone
Fast Six to determine positions one through six.
-------------
Takuma Sato brushed the wall, but had the second fastest time during morning
practice.
SUNDAY MORNING PRACTICE RESULTS
Qualifying began at noon. Weather was sunny and 78 degrees.
All drivers were able to make a qualifying run before 3 p.m.
The fastest 12 will advance to Top 12 Qualifying at 4 p.m.
The remaining drivers' starting positions (13-33) are now set.
It was hot and windy on the track.
Teams used different strategies with the hybrid power boost - some only using it
on the last lap, while others used it sporadically throughout their four laps.
After their Top 12 qualifying laps, all the drivers said how hard it was, they had to
work their tools and hang on.
Felix Rosenqvist was fastest of the dozen, with a 4-lap average speed of
232.065 mph.
Six drivers move on to the Fast 6 Qualifier, which will determines the order of the

Usually, after securing a qualifying run on Saturday, the drivers have the rest of that
day to make more attempts to improve their times. This time, 21 drivers were stuck
with their first qualifying attempt, while the fastest 12 moved on to Top 12 qualifying.
The Indy 500 Grid is now set.

During an overcast 80-degree afternoon, the IndyCars came out for a two-hour
practice session.
About a half-hour into the session the first accident of the week happened, and it
was a big one.
As Alex Rossi was going into Turn 2, his back-end came around on him and he spun
into the wall.
There were a line of cars behind him, all at speed. Pato O'Ward let off the gas and
his car spun and slammed hard into Rossi's car, which had bounced off the wall and
almost flipped over. O'Ward then slid across the track hitting the inside wall.
Romain Grosjean, hit his brakes, spun, hit the outside wall and slid across the track.
Debris was scattered all over the track.
With skill and luck, the rest of the drivers in the group missed hitting them or losing
control.
Rossi looked shaken when he got out of the car. O'Ward and Grosjean were soon
released from the infield hospital.
UPDATES:
The Dale Coyne Racing Honda #18 of Romain Grosjean will be repaired for the
race.
Pato O'Ward will race a backup car and get a new engine. He will retain his 2nd
row starting position.
Alex Rossi was taken to the hospital and had out-patient surgery on his ankle and
a finger on his left hand. If medical staff determines he can race in the Indy 500,
he will use a backup car with a new engine and retain his front row starting position.
However, if Rossi cannot drive in the race, another driver will be selected to
replace him and will have to start on the last row in 31st position. In addition, he
will need to complete a refresher session.
After qualifying, IndyCar Officiating penalized two drivers for having unapproved
parts on their cars.
#4 Caio Collet (AJ Foyt Racing) and #24 Jack Harvey (Dreyer & Reinbold
Racing) have their qualifying times stricken, moving them to the back of the grid.
Collet, who qualified 10th, will now start 32nd and lost his qualifying points for making the Top 12.
Harvey, who qualified 29th, will now start 33rd.

session ran.

Josef Newgarden was fastest during practice with a speed of 228.342 mph.

110th Indianapolis 500 Post-Race Notes
- This was the first career Indianapolis 500 victory for Felix Rosenqvist in his eighth career
“500” start.
- Felix Rosenqvist won today by .0233 of a second over David Malukas, the closest finish in
“500” history. The previous closest finish came in 1992 when Al Unser Jr. beat Scott
Goodyear by .043 of a second.
- Today’s race featured an event-record 70 lead changes. The previous record was 68, in
2013.
- Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian earned its second Indianapolis 500 victory. Helio
Castroneves earned his record-tying fourth “500” win for the team in 2021.
- This year's finish marks the fifth time in “500” history that the driver leading the race lost
on the last lap.
It was 90 years ago ...
That the tradition of the Indy 500 race winner began getting a glass of milk.
That the Borg-Warner Trophy debuted.
That the Pace Car was awarded to the race winner for the first time.
The race sold out. 330,000 people attended the Greatest Spectacle in Racing -
The largest one day sporting event in the world.
The race started on time and the fear of a rain-out proved unfounded.
There were a couple of short caution periods during the race for sprinkles.
Ryan Hunter-Reay lost control and wrecked on Lap 17, which caused Katherine Legge to
swerve hard to miss him, which caused her to crash too.
Ed Carpenter had been running in 15th when he crashed after a restart on Lap 26 and hit the
Turn 1 wall.
Alex Rossi was swapping the lead at the start of the race with Alex Palou, but had to retire
on lap 91 with engine problems.
Josef Newgarden was running in 4th, but then made a mistake on a restart and hit the safer
barrier hard in Turn 4, ending his race on Lap 124.
Rookie Caio Collet had an up and down day, leading the race early, going a lap down, and
then moving up to 11th. He put it in the Turn 4 wall with nine laps to go! Lots of fire came
from the car as he rebounded off the wall.
That accident brought out the red flag.
After the restart, with just a few laps to go, rookie Mick Schumacher brushed the wall, and,
though he kept going, a caution flag came out.
The race went green for the final time with 1 lap to go. David Malukas led in his #12
Penske Chevy and seemed to have the race won, but Felix Rosenqvist decided to floor it
and risk passing cars on the outside through turns 3 & 4. Gaining momentum, he was able to
catch Malukas and nosed ahead of him at the last second! It was the closest finish in history!

CLOSEST FINISH IN 500 HISTORY!
|
24 y/o David Malukas was devastated. He finished 2nd in last year's Indy 500 too.

UPDATES:
Alex Palou and Chip Ganassi Racing received a post-race technical inspection penalty - the
front wing on the No. 19 failed the height measurement. IndyCar Officiating determined that the
non-compliance was the result of an assembly error and not an intentional modification. Car No.
10 was penalized five championship driver and entrant points and the team was fined $10,000.
Katherine Legge flew to Charlotte from Indy and then competed in the Coca-cola 600 after
competing in the Indy 500. She finished in 31st, the last car still running and 12 laps down at
the Nascar event.
Josef Newgarden injured his left foot in his crash which the doctor called minor. He showed up
at Detroit Friday wearing a brace on it.
The race purse increased $10 million over last year. The winner received $4.3 million of the
$30,906,400 race purse.

Sonsio Grand Prix at IMS
May 9 - Alex Palou was significantly faster than
other Indycar drivers in yesterday's practice.
Graham Rahal, Kyle Kirkwood and Felix
Rosenqvist were the next fastest. Rain fell hard
in the afternoon, washing out Indycar qualifying.
Before that happened, Indy NXT got a race in that
began dry, but ended in the wet. Enzo Fittipaldi
charged from 10th and outdueled Lochie Hughes
for the win, adding to the Fittipaldi legacy at the
speedway. Enzo's grandfather Emerson
Fittipaldi won two Indy 500s and his cousin
Christian Fittipaldi, with Joao Barbosa, won the
2014 Brickyard Grand Prix sports car race.
A USF 2000 race was won by Anthony Martella.

The weather was perfect on Saturday - sunny and
72-degrees.
The morning Indycar warmup sessions was
replaced with Indycar qualifying. Palou easily
captured the pole with a margin of 0.5475
seconds. This was his 3rd pole in a row at this
event.
The USF 2000 and USF 2000 Pro series both held
two races over the morning and early afternoon.
Jacob Douglas and Jack Jeffers won the USF
Pro races and Sebastian Garzon and Brad
Majman won the last two USF 2000 races.
Series rookie Tymek Kucharczyk, earned his first
career victory by holding off Max Taylor to win
the second Indy NXT race of the weekend. The
young Pole has finished in the Top 5 of all races
this season.
SONSIO GRAND PRIX
There was a pile up at the first turn on the first lap
of the race, which isn't unusual for the Sonsio
Grand Prix. This time it happened at the front of
the field, scattering cars in all directions. It was
caused by Rosenqvist who came into the turn too
hot. Some cars sought repairs, but all were ready
at the restart.
On Lap 27 of 85, an accident in Turn 13, among
three drivers, knocked Rosenqvist out of the race.
Christian Lundgaard passed David Malukas for
the lead on Lap 68 and held on to win the Sonsio
Grand Prix.
