New Land Speed Record for Hydrogen-Power

Aug 11 - Andy Green is the only person to ever break the sound barrier on land. And on Tuesday
he shattered several more speed records, driving faster than anyone ever had officially achieved in
a hydrogen-powered or clean-power car.

Driving the
JCB Hydromax on the Bonneville Salt Flats, the 64-year-old ex-British fighter pilot made
two attempts in opposite directions, which is the requirement to set a record. He recorded a speed
of  400.623 mph in the first run and 412.135 mph in the second, for an average of 406.320 mph.
The JCB Hydromax is a blown gas streamliner that uses a supercharger to force more air into the
engine.

It measures 32-feet-long and is equipped with two 800-horsepower engines, one mounted in front
of the driver and the other behind them.

The previous speed record for a hydrogen-powered car was 185.5 mph, set in 2004 by the
BMW H2R.

JCB and Green also holds the land speed record for diesel-powered cars.  The JCB Dieselmax went
350.092 mph in 2006 at Bonneville.

Green is best known for holding the current overall land speed record of 763.035 mph in the jet-powered
Thrust SSC which he set in 1997.
