NASCAR Boosts Horsepower at Select Tracks

Oct 8 - Nascar Cup is raising the horsepower from 670 to 750 at select tracks next season.

They say that the move comes amid growing demand from drivers, the industry and fans.

The increase is expected to place a greater premium on drivers' throttle control, while also
incentivizing tire management and creating more passing opportunities.

The races that will be affected are those that are less than 1.5 miles in length which include
5 road courses and 10 ovals.

Nascar executive John Probst said NASCAR officials, engine builders and teams arrived at
the 750-horsepower figure as a happy medium. Implementation will take place by using a
larger tapered spacer on top of the engine’s intake manifold, improving engine airflow and
power. Achieving an even higher horsepower number would potentially compromise
reliability and would require more development and cost.
McLaren Trophy Race 1

10/16 - Six different GT racing series will be
competing this weekend at the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway, culminating in an 8-hour
endurance race on Saturday.

While all the teams and drivers came on track
today for practice, the McLaren Trophy America
series held their first of two races on this sunny
and mild Thursday.  The field consisted of 14 cars
divided among Pro, Pro-Am and Am classes.
The race was 50 minutes long (33 Laps.)

Contact was made twice between cars, but did
not result in any damage.  (Kevin Madsen was
spun and James Sofronas was driven off track.)

There was a mandatory pit stop for all cars, most
of whom switched drivers at that point.

The Pro class winning #74 RWE Motorsport car
was driven from the rear of the pack to the lead in
the first ten minutes by
Casey Dennis.  His
teammate,
James Li, brought it home in second.

The Pro-Am class and Overall Winner was the #24
Forte Racing car driven by
Tanner Harvey and
Patrick LIddy.

Colin Harrison finished the race in 4th, winning
the amateur class in the #21 Techsport entry.

The McLaren Trophy series will race again tomorrow.

The weather was 70 degrees, partly sunny and
windy.

Four series held qualifying sessions through out
the day - see results below.

The McLaren Trophy Series held their 2nd race in
the early afternoon.
Cooper Broll and Tommy
Pintos
won the PRO class.  Harvey and Liddy
once again won the Pro-Am class and
James
Sofronas
won the AM class.

Later, the GT America series held their first race.
Memo Gidley won the SR03 class and was the
overall winner.
CJ Moses won GT2.  Both drivers
were racing Audi R8s.
Mike Johnson drove a
Aston Martin Vantage to the GT4 class win.

GT America's next race will be Sunday.
Alexandra Hainer races Pro-Am in McLaren Trophy.
She has also raced in IMSA this year.
The day began partly cloudy and 60 degrees.

The TC America series kicked things off at 8 a.m.
with a 40-minute race that saw
Jonathan
Neudorf
complete 16 laps to win the race in a
Toyota GR Corolla in a field of 12 cars.  There
were no incidents other than a spin in the final
minutes.

The next race were 29 amateurs racing Toyota
GR86s in the GR Cup.  26 laps were turned during
the 45-minute race.

Following that was the 1-hour GT4 America race,
which finished at 11 a.m.
Tyler Gonzalez &
Gresham Wagner in the Silver (pro) class won it
in the #68 Supra.  34 laps were completed in the
race.  There was a crash on the first lap going into
the first turn which resulted in the exit of the pole
sitter and several other cars.

The 8-Hour feature race of the weekend kicked off
at noon.  The sun was out, it had warmed up and
it was windy.

There were four hours of trouble-free racing and
then heavy rain and lightning came, bringing out
the red flag.

After several hours, the yellow was deployed and
the cars went back out into the dark and the rain
to make slow laps behind the pace car.

A brief restart was soon brought back to yellow
due to a car blocking the pit lane.

The rest of the race was ran under yellow.

The morning began cold  (55 degrees) and raining.

TC America Race 2
Race clock started under caution after PJ Groenke spun on the wet track and hit the wall.
The green flag for the 25 minute race finally flew with 15 minutes left to run.

Dean Lambros and Antonio Costantino battled back and forth over the final laps while
running 23 seconds behind the leader -
Jonathan Newdorf.  At the checkered flag,
Costantino edged Lambros by 0.183 seconds for 2nd place!

This was Neudorf's 5th win in a row.  After the race, he had to go get ready for the next
race - GT4 America race 2.

F1 switches to Apple TV for 2026

10/23 - Broadcast rights for Formula 1 in the US are
changing next year.

Currently, the European-based race series has
been available to US viewers on the ESPN sports
channel, which is included in most cable TV
packages. It has been reported that ESPN were
paying $80 million per year to F1 for broadcast
rights.

A five-year broadcast deal has been arranged by
the streaming Apple TV+ service for those rights
that break down to $150 million per year.

There are approximately 70 million cable TV
subscribers in the US.  While Apple does not
release numbers, it has been guessed that Apple
TV+ has 25 million paid subscribers at a time.

The cost of a subscription to Apple TV+ has been
rising over the years.  Last month, the price rose
from $10 to $13 per month.  To recoup the F1 fee,
Apple TV+ would need to add 11.5 million
subscribers at that rate to break even.

Never mind that, it was reported that Apple TV+ is
losing $1 billion per year and are spending around
$4.5 billion on content annually.
While that sounds alarming, you must consider
how rich Apple is.  Their cell phones, which make
up 47% of their profits, grossed $191 billion in
2024.  Apparently, a billion dollar loss is of small
consequence to them.

None the less, why pay almost double what
ESPN was paying?  Was there a bidding war?
Perhaps F1 wanted more cash to make up for
the fact that fewer people access Apple TV+
than ESPN/ABC.

In the past, several US F1 races and the Mexico
Grand Prix, have been broadcast on ABC, which
made the races available to everyone with a TV
set.  That will surely not continue.

F1 has been offering their own streaming deal
separately from ESPN to US viewers in recent
years which had a subscription price of $85/year.
There has been no report yet on whether this
service will continue after the change to Apple
TV+.

Commentary arrangements have not been
decided - Apple will not initially produce its own
commentary and is likely to buy either that of F1
TV or the UK's Sky network.
10/21 - AJ Foyt Racing is partnering with HMD Motorsports to form a 2-car
Indy NXT team in 2026.
10/21 - The track surface in turn 2 at IMS has been becoming a bit uneven as the
underlying bricks have been pushing to the surface.  IMS used a roller last year to
flatten the bump that was forming at the exit of the turn.  This week they ground
and repaved that trouble spot.
10/21 - Colton Herta, after being named reserve driver for the new Cadilac F1 team
and quitting
IndyCar to pursue Formula 1, has been hired by Hitech Racing to compete
in
Formula 2 in 2026 to gain more FIA Super License points.

GT4 America - Race 2

The first 8-minutes of he 60-minute race began
under Full Course Yellow due to standing water on
track.

Danny Dyszelski led until he ran off the wet track
and Kenton Koch took over the lead in his BMW
M4.  The car continued in the lead to the pit stop
and driver change to
Kevin Boehm.

Meanwhile,
Jesse Webb moved into 2nd in his
Aston Martin Vantage.
Toyota GR Cup - Race 2

Westin Workman passed the pole sitter and
Lucas Weisenberg at the Turn 2 on the first lap,
taking the lead.  The two fought back and forth
until a crash sent  Weisenberg out of the race.

A third full course yellow came out toward the end
and the race finished under yellow with Workman
clinching the win.
GT America - Race 2

This race also began under caution due to a wet
track.  The drivers in the front row pit to put on
rain tires and the driver in P3 was penalized.  This
handed the lead to Joel Cortes at the green flag.

In a spectacular display of car control,
Ross
Chouest
executed a daring three-wide move into
Turn 1 to seize the lead in the SR03 class in his
Corvette Z06.  He was followed by
Mirco
Schultis
in a Callaway C7 Corvette,  while Cortes
dropped to third.

Chouest was able to keep Schultis in his rear view
mirror to the end, winning the race.

In the GT4 class,
Jozsef Petkes passed Craig
Lumsden
for the lead at the halfway point and
continued on to win the class in his No. 83 Porsche
Cayman.
With 10 minutes to go, Webb and Boehm tangled, and Webb got a penalty for the contact,
sending him to midfield.

Mike David Ortmann was able to pass Boehm and hang to win the Silver class and the race
in the No. 4 JMF Motorsports Aston Martin, with co-driver
Braydon Arthur.
10/30 - After competing in 20 Indy 500s, Marco Andretti will not be on the grid next
year.  At age 38, Marco announced his retirement from auto racing and the Indy 500.

10/24 - Ed Carpenter Racing  is partnering with Cape Motorsports to join the Indy
