1996 CART CHAMPION - JIMMY VASSER
|
Rookie of the Year was Alex Zanardi, who finished 3rd in points.
CART began their boycott of the Indianapolis 500 and held a 500-mile race at
Michigan on the same day. Ironically, the CART contingent had predicted that
the Indy 500, now sanctioned by the Indy Racing League, would be a crash-filled
joke. But it was their "US 500" race that was the crash-filled joke. They never
attempted to run against the Indy 500 again.
Rookie driver Jeff Krosnoff and a course worker died in an accident at the
Toronto round, one week later Emerson Fittipaldi was in a serious accident
at the start of the Marlboro 500 and had to retire.
Reigning champion Jacques Villeneuve had departed for Formula 1, where
he would soon win their championship, driving for Williams F1.
