His team, Forsythe/Green Racing, were new to IndyCar.

Michael Andretti returned from Formula 1, and joined Chip Ganassi's team.
His father, Mario, retired from IndyCar racing at the end of this season.
Nigel Mansell returned as defending champion.

Team Penske became a three-car team and switched from Chevrolet
to a Mercedes Ilmor engine.  Their three drivers finished the season in
the top three positions of the championship.
