The Inaugural Pole
At 12:15 p.m. when the track went yellow for rain,
Rick Mast had already clocked the second best practice
speed at 170.361 mph. Mast was 13th in line to qualify
when the weather cleared. His mark of 172.414 mph
captured pole position, the $50,000 Busch Pole Award
and a $5,000 GTE "Front Runner" Award.
