March 5, 2026 - With Colton Herta's selection as test driver for the new
Cadillac Formula 1 Team, Herta has paused his IndyCar job and will be
racing in Formula 2 this year - the training ground for F1 - in order to
increase his chances of being hired as an F1 driver.
He will be driving for the Hitech team.

Summary of What Led to Herta's Foray into F2
Michael Andretti began trying to start a Formula 1 team years ago.
Andretti driver Colton Herta was often mentioned as a possible driver.
After years of back and forth, Andretti Autosport ended up being taken
over and renamed Andretti Global, with the founder moved to role of
"advisor." Negotiations progressed and now Michael's goal has come
true with the formation of a new team - Cadillac Formula 1 Team,
increasing the number of F1 teams to eleven.
For its first year, Cadillac has hired two veteran drivers - Valtteri Bottas
and Sergio Perez. In addition, they hired Colton Herta as a test driver.
With that position, Herta has a hope of getting an F1 ride. To aid in that
dream, he decided to exit IndyCar and spend 2026 racing in F1's training
ground - Formula 2.
There, he'll get to experience many of the Formula 1 race tracks and
learn their cars and ways of doing things.
In addition, he'll gain points toward earning the required F1 Super
License. He currently has 34 license points earned in IndyCar over the
past couple of years, but needs 40. He will earn those points if he can
finish the season in 8th or better.
Having a Super License doesn't guarantee an F1 ride of course. Winning
the F2 championship could carry more weight with Cadillac F1 than
having an American driver.

March 17 - The FIA cancelled both April races as they were in the Middle East, which is currently
a dangerous area due to the US-Iran war.
April 10 - F2 has added F1's two North American races in May to their schedule.
April 18 - Cadillac F1 says they plan to have Herta run in Free Practice 1 at four F1 races this
year, beginning at Barcelona Spain. It coincides with F2 and Herta will have to jump from an F2
car to a F1 car on Friday, June 12. Also, Herta said he has yet to run any F1 simulations this
season.
June 7 - Herta received a 10-second penalty for a Virtual Safety Car infringement, unraveling his
race at Monaco.
June 12 - At Barcelona, in addition to his F2 duties, Herta drove Sergio Perez’s Cadillac F1 car
for the first time in. He completed 27-laps in practice session 1.
About the session, Herta said, "A lot of firsts for me. Not a long time to get up to speed but it
was very enjoyable. The car was very impressive to drive, and I felt confident after a few laps
so overall, I think it was super positive. It’s my first time wearing the Cadillac overalls and being
fully integrated with the team in a driver role. Starting from the ground up, I think where the
team is now compared to where they started is remarkable and it’s only going to get better. We
got through our run plan successfully today so I’m looking forward to the next one, and getting
quicker and quicker every time."
Graeme Lowdon, Cadillac F1 Team Principal, said, “It was great to have Colton in the car today
as part of our program. We’re only seven events into the season now, we’re getting more
mature as a team, and we can cope with the changes to having a new driver in the car. Colton
did a very good job for us today, he got through his run plan helping the team gain valuable
data, and he knows what to expect from future FP1s."
June 13 - In the F2 Sprint race at Barcelona, Herta was in 3rd on the last lap, but went off track
and ended up 5th.
July 24 - At Hungary, in addition to his F2 duties, Herta drove Valtteri Bottas’s Cadillac F1 car.
He completed 28-laps in practice session 1.
About the session, Herta said, “It’s been very enjoyable to be able to drive the car again and
work with everyone in the team. We got through everything in our run plan during the session
with a lot learned on a personal level and for the team. I’ve been able to build on my
understating of the characteristics of the car since my last outing in Barcelona. I feel more
comfortable in the car every time I drive it, which is positive. I can't wait for the next one.”
Graeme Lowdon, Cadillac F1 Team Principal, said, "Track evolution and gusty winds were both
factors today as we worked through our program. We’ve focused on ride and balance, and we
made good progress throughout the day. It was great to have Colton back in the car for FP1
and he has again done a really good job for the team, delivering everything that we asked of
him.”

Hungarian F2 race.
