Sonsio Grand Prix - Day 1
May 9 - IndyCar was joined by the junior series at
IMS for the Sonsio Grand Prix weekend.
The day was sunny and began with cool
temperatures, but would warm up into the 60s.
Unlike the usual 3-day race weekend, IndyCar
have just two days. After two practice sessions,
IndyCar held qualifying for tomorrow's race.
Alex Palou qualified on pole. The big surprise
was that all Rahal Letterman Lanigan cars
qualified in the top 6.
The junior series were able to fit in practices,
qualifying and a race on this busy day.

Sonsio Grand Prix - Day 2
May 10 - Sunny and 75 degrees.
Races kicked off early for the three junior series.
The IndyCar race was the last event of the day,
beginning at 4:30 pm.
In a new twist affecting race strategy, the drivers
were required to run both types of tires - hard
black primaries and softer red alternates - twice
during the race.
Graham Rahal grabbed the lead at the first turn
over Alex Palou and managed to stay out in front
of the reigning IndyCar champion, who has been
almost unbeatable this season. But on Lap 56 of
85, Rahal's rear tires were so worn, Palou passed
him for the lead.
At the last round of pit stops, the leaders were all
able to switch to the preferred alternate tires,
except for Rahal, who had to run the harder
primary tires. RLL's strategy for Graham failed,
as he fell back to finish 6th.
It was looking to be the 4th IndyCar race in a row
with no cautions, but on Lap 69, David Malukas
suffered a mechanical problem that put him in the
grass, and the yellow flag waved.
That bunched up the field, but Palou kept the lead
and won his 4th race of the season!
Pato O'Ward and Will Power finished 2nd and
3rd.

Practice started two hours, 32 minutes late due to
intermittent rain and damp track conditions, and
the session ended 32 minutes early due to
lightning strikes within the vicinity of the speedway.
All 34 drivers practiced. Kyffin Simpson ran the
most laps - 87, while the Italian PREMA team was
only able to get rookie driver Robert Shwartzman
out for 6 laps.
Will Power was fastest of the day with a lap of
227.026 mph. He was followed on the speed list
by his Penske teammate Josef Newgarden.
A couple of the veterans returning for a one-off
were in the top 10 - Helio Castroneves and
Marco Andretti - the fastest of the 4 Andretti cars!
Both PREMA cars were slowest - with speeds in
the 217s.
PRACTICE 1 RESULTS (pdf)
Helio Castroneves was 6th fastest today in his return to an IndyCar, with a speed of 224.523 mph.

Practice started an hour late so the track could be
dried from a morning shower.
Drivers then enjoyed several hours of practice in
sunny 75-degree weather, before a little rain
closed things down for another hour.
The track was soon dry and practice resumed at
4:25p.
A total of 2,555 laps were turned today among 34
drivers.
Robert Shwartzman finally got to spend some
time behind the wheel, putting in 93 laps.
Alex Palou was fastest today, achieving a speed
of 227.546 mph in 99 laps.
Ed Carpenter was slowest. He reached 220.476
mph while turning 38 laps.

IndyCar Works Toward a Greener Future
May 15 - IndyCar announced two more ways they
are working toward a less polluting organization.
They have purchased a Class 8 semi that runs on
natural gas. It will be used to pull their Tech
Inspection Trailer to all of the IndyCar events this
year.
Natural gas-powered engines, like the Cummins
X15N, emit less CO₂ than traditional diesel
counterparts. It can run on renewable natural
gas (RNG), a fuel derived from organic waste.
IndyCar is also implementing emmissions tracking
software from NTT Data to provide them and their
partners with data-driven insights into the carbon
footprint of race operations and logistics
throughout the season.
Alex Palou Was Fastest Wednesday
|
It was a hot and windy day.
Tony Kanaan, the Team Principal for Arrow
McLaren, completed his Refresher Test this
morning, the last of the veterans to do so. Not only
do the rookies have to pass their on-track
orientation tests (which all three have done,) but
drivers who have not competed in an IndyCar oval
race in the past 6 months are generally required to
pass a Refresher test. Kanaan is a backup driver
for Kyle Larson in case he can't race due to his
Nascar obligations.
The first incident of opening week happened in the
afternoon when Christian Rasmussen was going
through Turn 2. His back end started coming around
and he grazed the wall with his right rear as he spun
back across the track. He had no further contact
and the drivers directly behind him went high and
avoided him. The damage was minor and he was
soon back out practicing.
Conor Daly continued his strong week by posting
the third-fastest speed of the day, 224.893. After
ranking 21st Tuesday, Daly has been in the top five
the last two days.
One-off driver Ryan Hunter-Reay, who won the
Indy 500 in 2014, was 5th fastest on the day. He
and Jack Harvey are driving for Dreyer-Reinbold
Racing w/Cusick Motorsports. The Indy 500 is the
only IndyCar race this team is competing in this year.
Josef Newgarden was fastest today with a speed
of 226.632 mph. He only turned 35 laps.
Graham Rahal was slowest of the day, reaching
219.606 mph during his 31 practice laps.
PRACTICE 3 RESULTS (pdf)
Today was unusually hot and windy. Normal high
temp is 64 degrees. Predicted high today was
88. It was 80 by the time practice started.
Qualifying begins tomorrow. Cars get to turn up
the turbo boost for it, that adds another 100
horsepower. All the cars today were practicing
for qualifying, so they had the boost turned up.
Usually during the 4-lap qualifying, a car gets
slower as the laps count down. But now, with
the new hybrid system, some cars were getting
faster, with their 4th lap the fastest.
There were concerns about how the added weight
of the hybrid system at the rear of the cars were
making it difficult to capture control if the rear
twitched while going through a turn. Consequently,
many drivers chose to get out of the gas if it
twitched and many were not completing their 4-lap
simulation runs.
Another concern about today was the weather.
The temperature should be much cooler tomorrow
so trying to set up the car today may not mean
much tomorrow.
Kyffin Simpson had a pretty wild wreck early in
the afternoon.
Coming into Turn 4 his back end came around on
him. He spun 180° and smacked the safer barrier
facing backwards. Rebounding off, the car flipped
sideways and went airborne until it was 90 in the
air. While in the air, it twisted around until he was
facing forwards. The car landed on its left side
then fell right side up. It slid while spinning 180° to
make contact with the inside safer barrier at the
entrance to the pit lane. It then rolled into the pits
straight, like everything was normal. Hilarious.
Simpson appeared to be ok.
Marco Andretti lost a piece off his car. Later,
Callum Ilott did too. It looked like flaps.
Some car brushed the wall.
Temps only hit 82°, then began to slowly drop.
At 4:30p, Kyle Larson wrecked. The back end
came around early in Turn 3 and he spun 360° and
hit the safer barrier head first. He slid and spun
down the track and came to rest back against the
outside wall with the rear of his car. He said he
was ok.
During Happy Hour, rookie Robert Schwartzman
came out and put down a solid 4-lap average that
put him 4th fastest of the day at that point.
2024 “500” pole sitter Scott McLaughlin turned
the fastest lap of the day, 233.954 mph.
McLaughlin’s fastest lap came with the benefit of
an aerodynamic tow during the first five minutes of
the six-hour practice session. But in the final 30
minutes of practice, 2008 Indy 500 winner Scott
Dixon laid down the second-fastest lap of the day,
232.561 while running alone during a qualifying
simulation. That simulation ended up being the
fastest qualifying sim of the day.

Indianapolis 500 2025 Qualifying Order
|

It is a much cooler day, with temperatures in the
60s instead of the 80s! It is still windy and it is
creating the most problem for drivers in T2.
The fastest drivers need to remember that today,
they are not qualifying for pole - all they need to
do is be among the fastest 12 and then they will
qualify again tomorrow.
INDY 500 QUALIFYING PROCEDURES
Marcus Armstrong had a hard crash during the
1-hour morning practice. He entered T1 a bit high.
The car twitched, he saved it, but it twitched again
and he lost the rear end, He made contact
against the safer barrier with the left rear of his
car. He then slid through the south chute
sideways and backwards, and hit the T2 wall.
Armstrong was taken away conscious, but on a
stretcher. He later reported that he felt well and
his team was trying to change his road course car
so he could try to qualify later.
An hour into qualifying, Colton Herta began his
run. His car snapped suddenly late into the first
turn. It spun ¾ and smacked the wall with the left
front. Then, rebounding backwards, the tail went
airborne. The car rotated sideways and flew
through the air upside down, and came down on
its lid. The car slid all the way through the short
chute, hit the T2 wall and slid along it with its right
rear tire hanging over the wall, before falling away
and coming to rest on track in T2. Emergency
vehicles were immediately on hand and carefully
flipped the car right-side up. Herta was slow and
wobbly getting out and making it to a vehicle to be
taken to infield hospital. He later reported that he
was ok.
Several drivers reported that qualifying was harder
than ever this year and that they were finding it
impossible to keep the accelerator mashed
through the 4 laps without lifting.
Rookie Robert Schwartzman has been
impressive again today, having one of the fastest
qualifying runs.
Conor Daly's car did not pass technical inspection
after his qualifying run and it was disqualified.
After his spectactular crash at noon, the Andretti
team hustled and put together a safe race car and
Herta came out just before 5pm an qualified it!
The Meyer Shank Racing team also hustled and
was able to get Armstrong a car by 5pm to try
and qualify after his morning crash. However, he
wasn't fast enough, so he'll try again tomorrow.
During the very last qualifying run of the day, Daly
qualified in 13th. He'll miss the shoot out
tomorrow, but knows he will be starting the Indy
500 on the inside of Row 5.
Felix Rosenqvist turned the fastest lap of the
day, going 234.176 mph
Alex Palou put together the fastest 4-Lap
average, 233.043 mph.

minutes into practice.
He spun in T2 and slammed the safer barrier at
over 230 mph with the front and left side of the
car. His left rear wheel tore loose and flew into
the air, gouging the track when it landed.
McLaughlin grabbed his helmet to try and steady
his head as the car flipped and rose into the air.
He landed right side up. He was interviewed 15
minutes later, and said he was fine.

After the practice session ended, there was a blind draw to determine qualifying order
for tomorrow. Drivers hope to draw a low number so they can make a qualifying
attempt before the track heats up in the afternoon. Below is the results of the draw.
McLaughlin had a good chance at the pole today, but now he'll miss Fast 12 Qualifying and settle
for starting the Indy 500 in row 4. He did have the fastest practice lap today - 233.553 mph
... for all the good that will do him.
Track workers cleared the mess and patched the track and cars were able to return to the track
a half-hour later.

LAST ROW QUALIFYING
The four slowest drivers from yesterday had to
qualify again to see which driver would be bumped
from the 109th Indy 500.
Marco Andretti and Marcus Armstrong put down
laps in the 229 mph range and were in.
The two Dale Coyne cars however were in the
227 range, with Rinus VeeKay edging out his
rookie teammate, Jacob Abel.
With minutes ticking down, suddenly VeeKay came
out to re-qualify! He didn't have hybrid power for
his first run and he feared Abel might re-qualify
and bump him out. He thought he could put down
a faster time with a charged battery.
He could not. His new time was slower, and Abel
moved into the 33rd and final position!
With just minutes to go, Abel went out to re-qualify
again too! Why?! He was in! VeeKay would not
be able to try again! It was crazy!
Team owner Dale Coyne said that he was leaving
it up to the drivers and that it was like playing
chess with yourself when you had two queens on
the board. I think he was leaving it to fate.
Abel's run was slower than VeeKay's 2nd run so
VeeKay was now back in! VeeKay felt a huge
wave of relief. He said he was good friends
with Abel, so it was bittersweet.
LAST ROW QUALIFYING RESULTS (pdf)
FAST 6 QUALIFYING
The final and fasted six cars came out to qualify
one last time to determine the starting order for
the front two rows. There were two Ganassi cars
and one car each from PREMA, McLaren, Meyer
Shank and RLL.
To most people's surprise, the new Italian team,
PREMA Racing, won the pole with their rookie
driver Robert Shwartzman, who has never raced
on an oval before!
His 4-Lap average speed was 232.790 mph.
Shwartzman is the first rookie to win the 500
pole since Formula 1 driver Teo Fabi did it in
1983.
He skipped the practice session earlier in the day
as he felt his car was good.
Shwartzman has won in WEC Hypercars, Formula
2 and GT World Challenge over the past 4 years.

Penske's cars will all start on

BREAKING NEWS!
Yesterday, right before the Top 12 Qualifying
session began, Team Penske had to withdrawal
the cars of Josef Newgarden and Will Power
because they failed to pass technical inspection.
The reason was that a seam around the
attenuator on both cars had been filled in, making
it smooth and theoretically more aerodynamic.
Not getting to qualify in the Top 12, meant they
were automatically slotted back into Row 4.
Overnight, IndyCar decided the team needed
punished and moved both drivers all the way to the
back row!
While unfortunate for them, it should add some
extra spice to the race as they try to move
forward on race day.
PRACTICE 7
The weather today is great - sunny and cool.
IndyCar has a two hour race practice today.
The added turbo-boost used for qualifying has
been turned down and will not be used for the
remainder of the month.
As soon as the session began at 1 p.m., many
cars came out right away. All 33 cars would put in
laps today.
13 minutes into the session, Christian
Rasmussen tagged the T2 wall with the right
rear. He maintained control as the car headed
toward the grass in the inside. He spun and
tapped the wall with the left rear corner. He did
not return to the session.
Drivers experimented with working in traffic and
the young rookie pole-sitter practiced many
scenarios as he attempts to prepare for the
biggest race of his life.
Alex Palou was fastest today with a lap of
226.765 mph.

May 20 - All reserved seating for the Indy 500 sold out, announced Doug Boles, IMS
president. "350,000 people will experience the Indy 500 in person." There are General
Admission tickets still for sale. The race completely sold out in 2016.
May 21 - Natalie Grant will perform the national anthem before the start of the 500.

Team Penske Crisis In Qualifying
May 21 - As the Top 12 qualifying for the Indy 500
was preparing to start Sunday, IndyCar technical
inspectors flagged Josef Newgarden's car.
It was determined that a gap around the
attenuator had been filled in and smoothed. This
was against the rules. Team Penske began to try
and remedy the situation by grinding it out,
However, this type of work is not allowed on pit
lane, so that was another rule violation. Team
Penske pulled the car back to the garage.
Realizing Will Power's car had the same issue,
his car was taken back to the garage as well.
Both cars would not take part in the Top 12
qualifying.
A few hours earlier, Scott McLaughlin wrecked
his Team Penske car and he was going to miss
out on Top 12 qualifying due to that.
Top 12 Qualifying results in two things - the
fastest six cars from the session move on to the
Fast 6 Qualifying, which determines the pole and
the first two rows of the starting grid. The slower
six cars from Top 12 make up rows 3 & 4 on the
grid.
It was thought that since none of the three Team
Penske cars qualified in Top 12, that they would
make up row 4.
IndyCar considered this overnight and the next day
determined that McLaughlin would start on the
inside of row 4. However, Power and Newgarden
would be penalized and sent to the back row to
start from positions 32 & 33.
Today, Team Penske responded by firing three of
their top men! Team President Tim Cindric,
IndyCar Managing Director Ron Ruzewkski and
IndyCar General Manager Kyle Moyer.
A similar situation happened in 2024 at St Pete.
In my opinion, this proves, once again, two things.
1) Team Penske does not receive any special
consideration from IndyCar officiating even though
Penske Entertainment owns IndyCar and the
Indianapols Motor Speedway.
2.) Roger Penske doesn't care how important
your job is is at Team Penske - you screw up and
put Team Penske in a bad light, you're fired.
The day was cool and breezy. It started out sunny,
but soon became mostly cloudy.
All 33 of the IndyCar drivers came out to practice
for two hours. They turned an average of 60 laps
each except for Alex Rossi, who only ran 5 laps
due to a water leak on the car.
The first caution came when Ryan Hunter-Reay's
car caught on fire while on track. He came to a
stop and quickly got out of the car. Track workers
ran over and extinguished the fire, but not before it
damaged the tub. Hunter-Reay will have to start the
race in a backup car.
Late in the session, Takuma Sato's car slowed
on track and came to rest in the north short chute,
triggering the last caution of the day.

Reserved seating sold out for the 500 and the television blackout of the race in central Indiana
was lifted. Including general admission folks, crowd estimates were 350,000 people on race day.
The weather was unusually cool resulting in a cold track that made it harder to heat the tires.
Sprinkles delayed the start of the race almost an hour. Sprinkles also brought out a caution for
a short time during the race.
There werer 6 cautions in the first half of the race, resulting in 43 laps ran under yellow.
There were 22 lead changes among 14 drivers.
Takuma Sato led the most at 51.
Alex Palou passed Marcus Ericsson to lead the last 14 laps.
This was the Spaniards first win on an oval!
He is on a winning streak and has set a new record for most points at the beginning of a season!
The total purse was $20,283,000.

Josef Newgarden was 1st, with a speed of
225.687 mph.
RESULTS FROM FINAL PRACTICE
After the session ended, a silly publicity stunt
proved very popular with the crowd - Six
Oscar-Meyer Wienermobiles held a 2-Lap race
around the mighty oval track. The wiener of the
Wiener 500 was Slaw Dog, who hauled buns!
After that, Team Penske earned $75,000 by
finishing 1st and 2nd in the Pit Stop Competition.
The final event of the day was the Carb Day
Concert with two acts - Brett Michaels and
The All American Rejects.

Sprinkles delayed start of race. New track dryers were Toyotas! I've never seen any truck at IMS that was not a Chevy.

A salute and rememberance of U.S. fallen soldiers has been part of the Indy 500 since the beginning. Joining the airplane fly over this year were a pair of Blackhawk Helicopters which flew above the cars during the formation lap. Everyone was impressed.

May 26 - Three cars did not pass post-race inspections and were moved to the back of the field:
Marcus Ericsson (Andretti Global) went from P2 to P30th
Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti Global) went from P6 to P31st
Callum Ilott (PREMA Racing) went from P14 to P33.
In addition, each car was fined $100,000 and their team managers suspended for the next race.
It didn't seem to affect the Andretti cars' prize money as each still earned over $600k.
Ilott though, only received $155k - the same as the car that didn't even qualify for the race.
