I came across surprising and interesting things while compiling the data for my list of World Leaders...
INTERESTING The prime minister of Luxembourg is openly gay. In some countries, gays are imprisoned. I was surprised to see that Jamaica was such a country. Jamaica had one of the lowest murder rates in the world in 1962 when they got their independence. It has become one of the worst (1,682 murders in 2009) While most countries in the western hemisphere have one leader, every country in Europe has a different leader for Head of State and Head of Government. The only female leader in the Western Hemisphere is a temp in Bolivia. Meanwhile, Europe has 12 female leaders. Indonesia is the world's largest island country, with more than seventeen thousand islands. The Prime Minister of Malaysia was born in 1925 – he’s almost 100! 16% of Canadians speak both French and English. Greenland has the highest rate of suicide in the world. There is no “u” in the spelling of the country Colombia. Nearly 95% of Uruguay's electricity comes from renewable energy, mostly hydroelectric facilities and wind parks. The U.S. has 200 million more people than Russia. India has 1 billion more people than the U.S. Pakistan has nuclear weapons. The President and Prime Minister of Sri Lanka are brothers! Communist tried to wipe out Buddhism in Mongolia in the late 1930s, closing 700 monasteries and killing 30,000 people, more than half were lamas. The number of monks dropped from 100,000 in 1924 to 110 by 1990. In 301 AD, Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion. In December 2019, Sanna Marin became, at age 34, both the world's youngest currently-serving state leader and Finland's youngest-ever Prime Minister. She’s probably the best looking as well. Kuwait and Bahrain are the only Arab countries to have a local Christian population who hold citizenship. The Kuwaiti dinar is the highest valued currency in the world. There are more Christians in Africa than Muslims. Most African national official languages are French and English, but many countries have dozens of local languages. Slavery is still practiced in Mauritania West Africa, though it was criminalized in 1981, the last country to do so. North Korea's GDP is $40 billion. South Korea's GDP is $2.3 TRILLION! There are many more countries and leaders in the Eastern Hemisphere than in the Western.
FUNNY! I could not find a photo of the Prime Minister of Greenland wearing a suit – Kim Kielsen always wears hoodies! Best Personal Name – Joko Widodo is the President of Indonesia. Best City Name - Ouagadougou is a capital in Africa. The currency in Costa Rica is the Colon. The currency of Vietnam is the Dong and their Prime Minister is His Excellency Phuc. The President of South Sudan always wears a black cowboy hat. The President of Moldova, Igor Dodon, looks like an Igor!
