Four-Time Indy 500 Winner, Al Unser, also won the National Championship in 1970.

Teo Fabi was rookie of the year, finishing just 5 points behind Al Unser.  
While Unser only won one race and Fabi won four, Fabi had five poor
races while Unser was consistently in the top 4.  
Fabi also won six pole positions including Indy.
Fabi left for Formula 1 the following year, but returned to IndyCar in 1988
with Porsche.

Al Unser's son, "Little Al", was a rookie this year.

Tom Sneva finally won the Indy 500, after three previous runner-up finishes.
